Abraham Lincoln

In 1860 people had different opinions about slavery in the U.S.A. The Republican Party was opposed to slavery and its spread. Lincoln was a Republican. He was elected president of the U.S.A. in 1860.

The south made most of its crops and wealth from slavery. 7 southern states seceded from the U.S. because Lincoln was elected president. 4 more slave states seceded by May 1861.

Lincoln wanted to keep the country united. Even though he was against slavery, he didn't think it would be constitutional to ban it where it already existed. So he supported the Corwin amendment, which would prevent the spread of slavery into the territories but would protect it in states that already practiced it. This was not enough to prevent war.

Lincoln felt that states did not have the constitutional right to secede from the Union. When the war started, he felt that the U.S. government now had the power to abolish slavery in the states that had seceded from the Union, since they were no longer protected be the constitution. This was the emancipation proclamation.

The emancipation proclamation was the first step in destroying slavery in the U.S. Abolition became the goal of the Union. It was no longer enough to prevent the spread of slavery, now was the time to get rid of it completely.

The Union's victory over the confederacy ended slavery in the U.S. This victory was achieved partially due to the scorched earth tactics that Lincoln authorized his generals to use. Those tactics involved complete destruction of any crops, livestock, and buildings that the Union army encountered in their marches through the south.

Lincoln was re-elected in 1864 during the Civil War. On April 9 1865 General Robert E. Lee of the confederacy surrendered. A few days later Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth, a southern sympathizer. Despite his death, abolition had begun and he helped to form the basis of our country today, where we value freedom and human rights.
